October news - Half-day retreat and Sokanbu visit

Half-day retreat and Sokanbu visit: October 15

On Sunday, October 15, we'll be visited by Dokan Kojima and Gyokei Yokoyama, both representing the Sokanbu in Los Angeles (the administrative office for Soto Zen in North America). So we can practise with them, we'll put on a morning program from 9:30am to 12pm at Halifax Independent School, 3331 Connaught Ave. Afterward, we'll go for lunch at Cha Baa Thai downtown (1546 Queen Street).

This is an opportunity to meet two wonderful priests and deepen the connection between our sangha and the broader Zen community. If you're planning to attend in person, please register by Friday, October 13. And like all of our programs, you can join us at our regular Zoom link from wherever you are in the world.

Dokan will leave early the next day for Hawaii, but Gyokei (who actually gave a dharma talk to THZ a few years ago, early in Covid days) will stay in Halifax through Wednesday morning (October 18). He hopes to connect with THZ members as much as possible while he's here, so if you're available to have coffee, do some sightseeing, or whatever, please let us know.

One-day retreat and precepts ceremony: December 9

We have a one-day retreat (online and in person) scheduled for Saturday, December 9 (the day after the Buddha's awakening.) We had to cancel the retreat we had scheduled for September because of Hurricane Lee, so we hope you'll be able to join us in December.  The retreat will be a little different than usual because it will feature a precepts ceremony for some of our members who have been sewing rakusus. We'll have more information and a detailed schedule as the date gets closer.
