THZ news: November/December
One-day retreat December 6
We're hosting a one-day retreat on Saturday, December 6, from 9 am to 4:30 pm Atlantic Time. You can join us in person in Halifax at the Atlantic Buddhist Meditation Centre, 817 Herring Cove Road, or online at our regular Zoom link (passcode = vow). We hope to see you there!
If you're planning to attend in person, please sign up by Wednesday, December 3, so we know how many to expect. A simple lunch will be served. When you sign up, please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. We're also looking for volunteers to bring soup, bread and cookies, and for online participants who can help out by ringing bells.
Rohatsu zazen
December 1 marks the start of Rohatsu sesshin, the retreat period that ends on the day of the Buddha's enlightenment, December 8. In solidarity with Zen practitioners around the world, we're adding 4 evenings zazen to our schedule that week.
- Monday, December 1, 7-8 pm
- Wednesday, December 3, 7-8 pm
- Friday, December 5, 7-8 pm
- Sunday, December 7, 7-8 pm
Tuesday, December 2 is our regular Tuesday evening schedule. Thursday, December 4 is the “Beginner’s Mind, Neurodiverse Mind” group at 6:45. And Saturday, December 6 is our one-day retreat.
We’re looking for volunteers to ring bells at the start and end of those extra evening zazen periods. If you’re interested, you can sign up to ring them.
December community night: THZ governance
On the second Tuesday of each month, we usually host a community discussion. On December 9, we’ll be presenting and discussing a draft governance framework that the THZ board has been working on.
As part of our ongoing growth and evolution, we have an opportunity to clarify how we hold responsibility together in our sangha. Our draft governance framework outlines the relationship between the board, abbot, and committees, and how shared our shared practice and structures support the life of the sangha.
We want to invite all members to our community night in December to discuss the draft framework, explore the underlying values and principles we want to uphold, and share reflections to help us ensure the framework reflects the spirit and aspirations of Thousand Harbours Zen. We hope to continue the conversation in January to discuss our collective goals for the future.
Tea with the community: November 30
We’re hosting a community tea event on Zoom on Sunday, November 30, from 2-3:15 pm Atlantic time (note that we’ve changed the time by a few hours). This is a chance to connect with your fellow sangha members to discuss anything. You can view this event, and all our other events, on our calendar.
